John Decker Photographs

"vows" - As a storyteller I want to create a series of moments in order to tell a particular story. A story that will inspire and touch the spirit in people for generations to come.

"editorial" - I draw inspiration for my commercial work from my background in film and fine arts. I have often been told that my editorial and corporate photography has a "cinematic" look to it. I think what is meant by that is that my work contains a narrative element to it. A sense that an image, like a scene from a film, contains a history both before and after the shot occurred.

"fine art" - I've always been drawn to those quiet, almost invisible moments in life which seem to hover just above the external world - moments where certain effects of light in the landscape suggest a reality apart from the known world. I want my work to reflect some of what I felt when confronted by such moments. In 2007 the title Half Past Night came to me while rummaging through a box of photographs. For me the name conjured up stories of people and places trapped between physical and spiritual space.

All photographs are toned gelatin silver prints, printed by hand in editions of 25 with 2 artists proofs. They are signed, dated, numbered, and titled in pencil on verso.
